a First hand report on Swabalambi by a Social Activist
was started in 1997 by a group of Special Educators and Rehab
personnel certified by the Rehabilitation Council of India.
The team started work in the Disability sector at the grass
root level. Most of the people in the remote villages do not
have the means to even travel to towns for consultation, professional
help and medical treatment. Swabalambi with its well equipped
staff provided these services at their doorstep.
its inception in 1997 Swabalambi has been engaged in rehabilitation
and training of disabled children with multiple disabilities,
in the rural areas of Assam and some other parts of the North
East region of India with special emphasis on those living
below the poverty line. The rehabilitation programme run by
Special Educators, Teachers, Therapists, Doctors, Rural Volunteers
and Disabled villagers is to ensure that the children with
disabilities one day become productive and contributing members
of the society.

of all persons with disabilities within their communities.
